Last updated: October 8, 2026.

After picking up an order, the first thing a delivery rider often wants to do is turn on the GPS and head out. However, if even one item—whether it’s a meal bag, a drink, or an insulated box—isn’t secured properly, it can shift at the first turn or when slowing down; if an item falls off the motorcycle, it could put other road users behind the rider at risk of having to swerve to avoid it. Today, we won’t be discussing whether the food tastes good; instead, we’ll break down the question of “Can I ride safely after loading my motorcycle?” into a few steps you can check before setting off.

First, consider the mounting location: leave enough space for your line of sight, the handle, and the bike frame.

According to a statement from the Lingya Vehicle Inspection Station published on the Ministry of Transportation’s 168 Traffic Safety Portal, carrying cargo on a motorcycle that is too tall may obstruct the rider’s view; cargo that is too wide may interfere with the path of riders nearby; and improperly secured cargo may cause items to scatter or leak. When delivery riders pick up large bags of food at a restaurant entrance, they should take a moment to stand beside their motorcycle and check: Are the items high enough to block their forward view, wide enough to interfere with the space on either side of the vehicle, or so bulky that they interfere with their ability to turn the handlebars, sit securely, or operate the brakes?

If there are too many items in this order to fit in the designated storage space, do not temporarily hang the bag in a place where it might swing around, or hold the food with one hand while riding. Park your bike first and rearrange the items; if you still cannot transport them safely, you should handle the situation through the platform or the restaurant’s established channels after parking safely. You should determine whether you can handle these items before setting off—not after you’ve already ridden to an intersection.

Next, let’s look at how to secure items: boxes, bags, and cups should not be allowed to shift around in the car.

A case from the New Taipei City Traffic Incident Adjudication Office, included in the Ministry of Transportation’s 168 database, serves as a reminder that unsecured cargo on a motorcycle may fall off while the vehicle is in motion, leaving riders behind no time to swerve out of the way. Applied to food delivery scenarios, inspections should not only verify that the insulated box is closed but also ensure that the box or delivery bag itself is securely fastened, that the openings are properly sealed, and that beverages or small items cannot slide out due to the vehicle’s movement. This is a manual inspection conducted before departure; just because nothing fell off during the previous delivery does not mean the load is secure for this one.

Once everything is secured, gently tap the box and bag while the vehicle is parked to ensure there is no noticeable movement, and check all visible fasteners, straps, and openings. Don’t just check from the rear of the vehicle; return to the driver’s seat to verify your line of sight and operating space. If the securing method has come loose or is damaged, fix it before setting off; items that are unsuitable for transport due to their shape or weight should not be forced into the designated space.

Reset it every time you pick up a meal—don’t leave the risk for the next intersection.

Delivery riders may pick up orders multiple times a day, and the size of the bag, number of cups, and how items are arranged for each order can vary. Before leaving the store, establish a consistent routine: make sure the items aren’t obstructing your view or hindering your control of the bike; ensure the box or bag isn’t shifting; check that the opening is securely closed; and finally, set your navigation, put on your helmet, and set off. If you feel the box shifting or hear unusual clattering sounds from the items while riding, pull over safely at a suitable location to check—do not reach in to adjust the items while riding.

These steps don’t take long, but they turn the hope of “praying the whole way that nothing falls out” into a verifiable prerequisite for setting off. Delivering the meal safely means ensuring that both you and the people behind you arrive safely.
