The 21-year-old "Fat Cat", a well-known game trainer in Mainland China, was recently reported to have been drained of 510,000 yuan (RMB) by his 27-year-old girlfriend during their two-year relationship, and finally chose to jump into a river to commit suicide because of the breakup. A number of netizens ordered various kinds of deliveries and placed them by the Yangtze River Bridge to pay tribute to "Fat Cat", but some of the deliveries appeared to be "empty packages", which aroused a public outcry.
According to Blue Whale News, the fat cat's avatar on his social media account before he was born read, "I don't want to eat a 10-dollar takeout, I want to eat McDonald's," prompting a large number of netizens to order a takeout to pay their respects to him by the Yangtze River Bridge, where he jumped into the river. However, some of the takeaways appeared to have empty bags, cups and water, causing public anger.
A number of netizens pointed out that the store involved in the incident defended that "as they did not want to waste the food, they replaced it with empty packets, cups or plain boiled water instead." The branded stores involved in the incident include, Cha Ba Dao, Wallace, Gong Cha, and Oxo Burger, etc. A total of six brands have released official statements on the incident, and four of them have made "store closure" and "10 times the amount of compensation" to the stores involved.
Lawyer Lian Runmin, deputy director of the Legal Affairs Department of Internet Business Compliance, said that the empty packages of the store in question violated consumers' right to know and breached their integrity, which is consumer fraud. According to China's Consumer Rights and Interests Protection Law and Food Safety Law, for producing food that does not comply with food safety standards, or operating food that is known to be non-compliant with food safety standards, consumers can demand a "refund of one and compensation of ten", with an increase in the amount of compensation of less than 1,000 yuan to 1,000 yuan.
Some netizens have compiled some of the empty bag brands and the current progress of the follow-up:
Wallace and Gromit: Store managers were demoted.
Second, Texaco: exposed by the takeaway boy, no response from the business at present.
Third, Tustin: Customer service responded, "It's being verified and processed."
The store claimed that it was just a "leakage", and the store in question has been closed and the order refunded at the original price.
V. Zhu Xiao Xiao: The store has been closed permanently, 10 times refunded empty package order.
Six, honey snow ice city: stores closed for rectification, empty packages 10 times the amount returned, the staff involved in the apology.
7. Cha Ba Dao: The staff concerned was fired, compensated 10 times of the order amount, and donated 1 million dollars to charity in the name of "Fat Cat".
Many netizens highlighted McDonald's, which did not have any empty bags, "McDonald's is the only conscientious business that has stood the test of time in this incident," and "It's a good thing that Fatty's favorite McDonald's doesn't have any empty bags".
