Hey, everyone, I’m Ivy, a food delivery rider who’s always on the go in the Taipei-New Taipei area. Today I want to talk about something that happened recently—it’s been the talk of the town in Taiwan’s food delivery community and has given us riders out on the streets plenty to discuss.
1. This incident took place in mainland China, where a young man named “Fat Cat” chose to take his own life due to relationship problems. It is said that he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend for two years, only to have her spend 510,000 yuan of his money. That figure is an astronomical sum to us, but that’s not the point.
2. On social media, Fat Cat once said he didn’t want to eat cheap takeout; what he really wanted was McDonald’s. These words seemed to strike a chord with many people, so some netizens used food delivery services to hold a memorial for him at the Yangtze River Bridge where Fat Cat jumped. I found this gesture quite touching.
3. However, as things progressed, some issues arose. It is said that some of the deliveries were “empty packages”—meaning they contained no food, just empty boxes, empty cups, or even just plain water. This time, netizens weren’t having it and began to question the sincerity of these deliveries.
4. Some businesses have explained that they use dummy packages to prevent food waste. However, this practice has clearly not been well-received. To date, six brands have issued official statements regarding this matter.
As a food delivery driver, I deliver meals to customers every day, so I know firsthand the hard work that goes into every meal. I believe that integrity is the most important thing, whether in food delivery or any other service. If you really can’t deliver, you should at least communicate clearly with the customer—not just brush them off like this.
This incident also serves as a reminder that, whether it’s food delivery or other services, we must pay close attention to every detail. After all, these details often determine customer satisfaction and the trust they place in us.
Finally, I’d like to say that life is full of setbacks, but no matter what, we must learn to face them head-on rather than run away. We deeply regret the choice that Fat Cat made, and we hope that everyone will find the right way to handle difficulties when they arise.
