Check Behind You Even When Stopped at a Red Light: Where to Stop While Delivering at Night

When you stop at a red light, your car may be stationary, but the risks don’t disappear. Especially at night, on downhill slopes, or around curves, drivers behind you may not notice the motorcycle ahead until it’s too late; stopping safely means more than just staying within the lines.

Defensive Driving Reminders

The Ministry of Transportation’s “168 Motorcycle Defensive Driving Guidelines” remind riders that when stopping at a red light, they should pay attention to the movements of vehicles behind them and avoid stopping directly in the path of oncoming traffic; extra caution is required at night and at intersections where the road behind is downhill or on a curve.

Choose a spot rather than scramble for one

Park legally along the marked lines, and be aware of any visible space to your left and right, as well as the movements of large vehicles. Don’t ignore your rearview mirrors just to check for new orders on your phone, and don’t park on crosswalks, as this deprives both you and pedestrians of a safe space.

Double-check before you start

After the light turns green, first check to see if there are still pedestrians or turning vehicles ahead, then pull away smoothly. Delivery times are estimates and should not be used as an excuse to rush to be the first to pull away or to enter an intersection that hasn’t yet cleared.
